What is a homestead?

For me, a homestead is any home whose inhabitants are striving for a sustainable, locally-focused lifestyle.  While acknowledging the troubling history of the word (see discussion at Grow and Resist and an article in The Michigan Citizen), I believe that ‘homestead’ has already acquired new connotations and a decidedly non-imperialist meaning.  The modern sustainable homesteading movement—which includes people living in city apartments, suburban tracts, and rural farms—emphasizes awareness of the rippling repercussions of all our actions and the necessity of making the most responsible, most sustainable, most conscionable choices.
